we could think of the operating system as a definition of what a computer is supposed to do, or what we're supposed to do with computers. look at web pages, create documents, manage documents. does that sound like an intelligent list? no, it sounds obtuse. but the problem is, if you try to define all of this in more detail, it becomes impossibly complicated. and yet, there is a way of doing that which is extremely simple. what computers do is they model three dimensional reality. oh, sure, they do all sorts of other things, but all of them are variations on modeling three dimensional reality.

one of a computer's capabilities is accepting and acting on instructions. computer, display facebook on my first wall. now i fly to my first wall, and i can see the facebook, displayed on it. It's an extremely narrow band up and down the center of my wall, with a thousand posts in it.

if i want, i can fly in closer and see whichever posts i want.
